Are You Planning On Taking Up a Civil Work Career?

Posted on

If you plan on becoming a civil worker, you need to note a few things to help you get a clearer picture of what civil work entails. Civil work in the construction industry mainly covers work like constructing roads, buildings, bridges, dams, water reservoirs, sewer systems, railways, subdivisions, etc.

Specialisation

During the construction projects mentioned above, a lot of work is involved, which means different specialists are needed. Know what you want to do or where your passion lies. You can be a surveyor, electrician, civil engineer, manager, supervisor, heavy machinery operator, welder, demolition expert, concrete expert, architect, foreman, etc. Once you figure this out, you can major in that specific area. If you want, you can major in many areas to be diverse and increase your chances of getting more employment opportunities.

What Takes Place During Civil Work?

Of course, what you'll do as civil work depends on your specialisation. Managers perform managerial duties, which can be project management, site management, construction management, etc. Supervisors mainly ensure that construction work matches the plan and designs without deviation. Each specialist handles his or her specific profession.

Additional tasks that are conducted in civil work may include tendering and liaising with the government. It is important to note that you might be expected to adhere to particular guidelines set by the government or local bodies.

Education

Your education may also depend on the specialisation you want. In most cases, you might need to hold a certificate or diploma in civil construction management or supervision. Other times you may be required to hold a degree in civil engineering. The more technical a particular specialisation is, the more qualifications you need to hold and the more advanced they need to be. For example, you might require a master's, doctorate or advanced degree, certificate or diploma in civil construction management.

Where Do You Find Work?

Most civil work is found in the construction industry. Look out for companies that specialise in the construction of buildings and structures, and those that handle communication and transport infrastructure. You can also find work in companies that specialise in the production, storage and distribution of water, gas and electricity.

Work is also available in the public sector. If you are skilled in drafting tender documents or setting up project specifications, then environmental firms, government departments and local authorities can hire you.

While in school, you need to gain hands-on experience, and this is why you should look for an internship. This way, when you complete your studies, you won't find it difficult to find work.
